AS I write this it’s 5.30am and my alarm clock has just gone off. I’ll have another 10 minutes then drag myself out of bed. After 10 days of eating, drinking, and siting on the sofa watching Back to the Future it’s time to go back to work.
It’s been a fantastic holiday. I definitely needed the rest and relaxation. I had a complete break from work and writing, and it was great. I’ve not had much time off the day job since August, and have also spent every spare minute bashing out my novel, so Christmas couldn’t come soon enough. I was exhausted.
I’m feeling much better now and looking forward to getting back into it, but it’s going to be hard to get up and face the cold, dark January morning. I love my job and have lots of writing and running goals for 2018, so that’ll help. And after the long, lazy days of Christmas, I’m ready to start working hard again so that I can (fingers crossed) achieve my ambitions.
For 2018 here’s what I want to achieve.
By February I want to finish the first draft of my running book. That’ll mean writing around 4,700 words a week. By the end of the year, the book has to be redrafted and ready for hand in as part of my MA Writing.
In running, I want to PB at 5km, 10km and half marathon. My current PBs are 5km – 20.09, 10km – 40.31, half marathon 94.22. Unlike last year when running didn’t take priority, things have to change. I’m ready to commit to training again, and, more than anything, I’m looking forward to smashing a few Personal Bests because it’s been too long. In 2017 I got one PB, this comes after three years of doing nothing but get PB after PB after PB. I know it’s not going to be easy, but I really do believe that hard work brings results. I’ve never been afraid of hard work.
I’m also taking part in my first (and probably last) 24-hour endurance race this year, and my aim is to survive that.
It’s now 5.38am, I’ll have two more minutes and then force myself up, ready to make a start on those 2018 goals.
