The Edinburgh Half Marathon is my favourite half marathon and one of the most popular in the UK. It’s flat and fast, takes place in one of the most beautiful cities in the world and has an incredible atmosphere. What’s not to love about it?
Here are seven reasons why you should run the Edinburgh Half Marathon.
1. It’s one of the fastest half marathons in the UK.
The Edinburgh half is fast. It follows the course of the Edinburgh Marathon which was voted the fastest marathon in the UK by Runner’s World. There’s a descent of almost 90 metres to near sea level, so if you’re chasing a personal best it has fantastic PB potential. If it’s your first half marathon it’s a great race to start with.
2. It takes in Edinburgh’s most iconic landmarks.
Starting in the grounds of the university you’ll pass Greyfriars Bobby, the National Museum of Scotland, before heading downhill to Princess Street Gardens where you’ll also have Edinburgh Castle as your backdrop. Then it’s onto the Royal Mile, heading down to the Scottish Parliament where Arthur’s Seat looms before you.
3. It offers picturesque views of the coast.
You’ll run through the Royal Park before heading for the East Lothian coastline where you’ll have some picturesque views on your way to the finish at Musselburgh where there is always fantastic support.
4. You’ll receive a T-shirt and medal.
The Edinburgh T-shirts are always fantastic quality and nicely designed. You’ll also receive a finisher’s medal and goody bag.
5. You’ll be part of a festival not just a race.
The half marathon is just one part of the Edinburgh Marathon Festival weekend. There’s the full marathon, half, relay, 10k, 5k and 5k for juniors.
6. There’s a great atmosphere.
There is something special about the Edinburgh Half Marathon. Thousands of runners from the UK and overseas take part every year. There’s a great sense of camaraderie. And it’s well organised with fantastic support on the route.
7. An early start means you can enjoy the rest of the day watching the marathon.
The half marathon starts early, before the Edinburgh Marathon, so you can finish your race and then enjoy watching the marathon runners as they come through Musselburgh.
